우린 이런말을 듣곤 한다.책 속엔..길이 있다...책 속에 꿈이 있다...고.맞다 그래서 어떤이는 책 한권에 빠져 뭔가를 꿈꾸고 실제로 그 꿈을 이루기도한다.하지만 나처럼..바보같이 다 자란후에 오에 겐자부로 작가가 허클베리핀의 모험에 깊은 감명을 받았다는 글을 읽고 다 자라서 그책을 들고 읽자니 이미 아는 내용과 너무 늙어버린 감정때메 감동은 커녕 읽는동안 내내 감옥이였다..ㅎㅎ초등학교 1학년때 데미안을 읽어 아직도 그 내용을 정확히 모르는것과 똑같은 바보스러운 일의 반복이였다.책을 읽는것도 중요하지만 언제 책을 펼치느냐도..책과 나의 궁합에 한몫하는것 같다.Winner of 6 National Awards:Benjamin Franklin Award "Best Children's Book" Joan Fassler Award for an Outstanding Contribution to Family Parents' Choice Recommended Parent Council "Outstanding" Selection American Bookseller "Pick of the Lists" Children's Book Center "Our Choice"Something to Remember Me By(2003년 3월생/1999 5월생)by Susan V. Bosak with illustrations by Laurie McGaw 맞닿은 뺨에서부터 대칭으로 똑같다..라는 느낌이 들죠.같은 핏줄이나 엄마와 딸은 아니고, 그렇타면 할머니와 손녀.서점에서 표지만 보고 집어들었는데...읽을수록 미치겠고...다 읽고나니 얼굴이 온통 눈물범벅이였다.창피해서 얼른 유모차를 밀고 화장실로~^^우느라고 깜빡하여 다음날 다시 나가서 구입했다는거 아닙니까..ㅋㅋSynopsis:Winner of six national awards, this heartwarming bestseller for children, grandchildren, mothers, and grandmothers is about love and legacies across generations. As the years pass, the keepsakes fill a cedar chest with memories, as it becomes clear that one gift is most precious of all -- the gift of love.Beautifully illustrated with rich watercolor paintings, this book is the perfect way to say "I love you." 잔뜩 안개낀 어느날 아침.조그만 접시를 한손에 들고 서 있으니 스쿨 버스를 기다리는 아이들이 이상하다는 표정.그도그럴것이 내손에 커피잔이 자주 들려있었는데..오늘은 접시..이상도하겠지..ㅠㅠ그 접시는 집에서 끝내지 못한 딸기 접시.걸어면서 딸기를 하나씩 먹였던 그날 아침에도 머리속엔 온통 Something to Remember Me By~먹다 남음 그만주면 될텐데...접시채 들고 나선 나.그런 엄마를 창피해하지않고 고마워하는 딸.나랑 참 많이 비교되는 부분이다.버스를 기다리는데 아침에 우유 배달이 늦어져서 못 먹었다고(물보다 우유를 더 많이 먹던 아이라)우리 할머니는 버스 정류소로 뛰어오셨다.삼각형 모양의 비닐속에 든 하얀우유를 높이 흔들면서...그때 난 창피해서 할머니에게 학교 갔다와서 먹음 되는데...왜...라고 했던것 같다.생리를 할때면 양이 적으라고 식탁에 국을 올리지도 않으셨고,대입 백일전이라고 그날 아침에 백일주를 먹여 학교에 보내주셧던 분이 바로 우리 할머니셨는데...가만히 아영이이와 나를 비교해보면 할머니에게 점점 더 죄송한 맘이 더 크진다.아영이는 멸치 볶음을 맛보면서도 그런다.와~엄마 이거 너무 맛있어.엄만 이렇게 맛있는걸 어떻게 만들줄 알지....울 엄마가 최고야.난 한번도 할머니에게 당신이 최고라고..해본적이 없는것 같다.아영이를 보내고 집으로 돌아오면서 손에 들린 하얀 접시만 봐도 눈물이 날 정도였다. "You're the best grandmother in the whole world!"the little girl would say.The grandmother would smile a big,warm smile and give her grandaughter a warm, snuggly hug. 유치원생인 나를 데리고 맨날 영화관엘 가셨던 울 할머니.자다가 본 귀신 영화가 무서워 울면 울할아버지 고함소리에 울할머니 달달달.관광버스 타고 서울가서 내선물 고르다 안내 방송 타셨던 겁없는 울 할머니.학생이던 남편에게 용돈 주시며 빼앗기지않게 비밀로 하라는것까지 알려주시던 할머니.돈없는 우리가 시아버님 뇌 수술비로 힘들때 당신의 전 재산인 통장 얼른 내미셨던분.시아버님 영정앞에서 가장 슬피 오래동안 우셨던 시아버님의 친구셨던 울 할머니.그런...그랬던 울 할머니...할아버지 제사날 할아버지와 같은 병으로 중환자실로 실려가셨고지금은 그만그만 하시지만 그날 할아버지를 못 따라간걸 아쉬워 하시는 분....요즘은 친정에 전화 한번 할려면 열번쯤 생각해보게됩니다.할머니가 받음..어쩌지..그냥 끊을수도 음꼬...예전처럼 우리 지나가~그럼 자주 하겠는데내 목소리만 들어도 먼저 울어버리니...한국으로 들어가는건 가능해도 다시 캐나다로 들어오는게 힘든게 지금의 형편.말씀은 안하셔도 기다리는것 같은 눈치신데...전 맘대로 갈 수 없는 이런 형편이 오히려 다행스럽기도...곱고 건강하셨던 그때 그모습은 지금도 그려지는데..아픈 모습을 보고,고운 모습을 밀어내고 가슴이 새로이 담고 있어얀다는게...생각만해도 참 힘들군요.서점에서 Something to Remember Me By를 펼쳐들고 펑펑 울면서...많이 안 아프시길....많이 안 아프시길.......나와 나의 가족들을 기다리지 마시길....나를 기다리지 마시길......제가 한없이 잔인하고,이기적이란 생각을 떨칠순 없지만..솔직한 제 심정은 이러하네요.책을 구입한후 한번씩 읽지만 아영이는 못보게 감춰둡니다.할머니란 이야기만 들어도 두눈에서 그리움이 뚝뚝 떨어지는데... 보고 싶은 할머니...그 이상은 아직까지 너무 힘들거란 생각이 들어서요.심지어 작년엔 밥을 많이 먹음 빨리 할머니가 되고 죽는다는 생각에 제게 밥 먹지 말라며 울기까지 했던 아이라서...그리고 또 하나 John Burningham의 Grandpa 비디오가 책보다 무척이나 좋은데이도 더이상 못 보여줍니다..훌쩍훌쩍 울고 그 후유증이 꽤나 오래 가고..해서요.죽음에 대한 지극히 동양적인 제 생각들이 딸에게 고스란히 전해진건지...얼마전에 머리가 하얀 할머니께서 요리시간에 나오셔서 양배추 스프를 끓이시며책을 낸 이유가 딸과 손자들이 할머니가 안 계실때 그때 우린 어떻게 이 요리를 하죠.그래서 책을 쓰게되었다고 하시며 행복해 하시더군요.좀 다르죠...ㅎㅎ cedar chest-삼나무로 만들었고 대부분 침대 발치에 놓고 장난감 등등 넣어두죠.특히 보물처럼 다루는 물건들을 주로 넣어두구요..ㅎㅎ요즘은 플라스틱으로 만든 이쁜 장난감 보관함을 더 선호하는 편이긴 하지만저도 아영이에게 하나 사줄려고 알아보다가 너무 비싸서..^^심지어 중고 가구점까지 가봤는데 새거나 중고나 값 차이라 별로 안나더라구요.요즘은 뚜껑 부분에 천을 깔아서 앉아서 책을 읽기 좋게 만들어진것도 보이고...Says Susan, "To me, a cedar chest is much more than just a piece of furniture. The words of the story, combined with the beautiful illustrations, are just perfect at capturing the importance of the grandparent/grandchild relationship. It brought back so many fond memories of my own grandmother, and the story is quite similar to my own daughter's relationship with my mother I immediately bought copies of the book for me, my mother, and my grandmother. It's definitely a book you share. My mother and grandmother liked it so much they recommend it to all their friends. Buy it now for your mother or grandmother! The illustrations compliment the text beautifully.I am a nurse in an Extended Care Facility, and have added this book to our selection of books available to both family and staff for coping with, and understanding aging.It was so simple ,yet so deep, when the grandaughter wrote her name on the back,of her photo so that her grandmother could remember her.
