Healthy teeth - A good start in life!
Early childhood tooth decay is a rampant, aggressive form of decay that may be experienced at a very young age. The decay attacks the primary teeth and can spread quickly until all the teeth are affected. In the disease's early stages, white spots or lines (called "carious lesions") appear near the gumline close to the tongue and typically go unnoticed. Parents realize that the child has a cavity when the teeth change colour to brown or black. The decay usually happens so quickly that parents may mistake it as normal tooth development.
Prevention starts at home
The Order feels that prevention of early childhood caries starts at home. It wishes to remind everyone, and particularly parents and future parents, of some simple and effective means of avoiding early childhood caries:
long before teeth start coming in, parents should be cleaning their baby's gums every day, morning and night, with a clean damp cloth wrapped around a finger; once the first teeth appear, use a small toothbrush with soft bristles and just a dab of fluoride toothpaste; choose healthy snacks, like fresh fruit, vegetables and cheese; visit the dentist for a check-up after the child's first birthday.
Babies can get cavities too, if:
they fall asleep with a bottle or sippy cup of juice, a sweet drink or milk in their mouth, since all of these contain sugar; they suck on a pacifier dipped in anything sweet; they are given sweet food or drinks all day long.
Beware of the baby bottle!
Do not use the baby bottle as a pacifier. To wean the baby, gradually dilute the juice or milk with water until your child is used to drinking just water. It is recommended that babies be taken off the bottle and given sipper cups during mealtimes as soon as they reach age 1, or when they develop the necessary coordination. The appearance of tooth decay Children develop cavities for many reasons, but the primary culprits are diet and poor dental hygiene. It is important to understand how cavities occur, and to know the various stages of tooth decay. After each meal, food debris clings to the teeth. If it is not brushed away, the bacteria in the mouth transforms the sugars in the food debris into acids that attack the tooth's enamel. That is why parents should teach their children proper oral hygiene as soon as possible and make it part of their daily routine.
Snackers beware!
Granola bars, raisins and 100% juice drinks also contain sugar. Parents should limit their children to one sweet drink per day. Give non-chewy, unsweetened snacks, such as cheese, vegetables and fresh fruit. Children should begin flossing once all their primary teeth have come in. Just a tiny bit of fluoride toothpaste is recommended for children under age two and a pea-sized amount for age two or over.

The Stages of Tooth Decay...
Tooth decay is a disease that attacks the dental hard tissues and spreads into the interior of the tooth to form a cavity and cause localized, progressive destruction of the enamel, dentin and dental pulp.
The chief cause of tooth decay is poor dental hygiene and a diet that is high in sugars. After each meal, food debris clings to the teeth. If it is not brushed away, the bacteria in the mouth transforms the sugars in the food debris into acids that attack the enamel and eventually enter the dentin and the dental pulp. The following illustrations show the stages of tooth decay:
