ONE
I looked out the window, slightly bored by my snoring father. Mother was knitting sweaters, and Lucy was playing with her doll. ‘I have quite a boring family,’ I thought. If father heard this, I’ll be
dead meat. Father was a fat, sensitive man, but Mother was a kind and tiny lady. I ask every time to
Mother when I see her: “Why did you marry Father?“ But every time I ask, she just turns her head away from me and starts crying quietly. I think there is something wrong with my mother.
When I was thinking all this, Lucy asked if we could go outside and play to Mother. Mother looked at
father if checking to see if he’s really sleeping, and when she nodded, we put on our shoes and slowly opened the door. When we were safely outside, we ran to Lakeside Park, which is near our house.
Father should be angry to know we were outside this moment. He doesn't like us getting fresh air and likes it when we are in the house, suffering from all the hard work he had gave us. I like him best when he is sleeping. If father wakes up when we’re outside, we’re dead. Mother, of course, doesn't like it when we’re given really hard chores to do, but she stays quiet, trembling with fear, because father hits us when mother stands up for us. I know mother is willing to get father to calm down on us,
but I also know that the fattest man in the world couldn't stand up properly if father has gotten angry on him.
When we entered the park, I looked at my watch. It was 3p.m. I did some math in my head. Father started sleeping at exactly 1p.m., and he usually sleeps 4hours at a time. If my calculations were right, We’d have to go home before 4p.m., and that leaves us less than one hour to play. I told Lucy my calculations, and we ran to my best friend’s, whose name was Sarah. When we reached Sarah’s house, Sarah came out and suggested that we play soccer, her favorite game. So we brought her soccer ball along and played soccer, excited all over. Sarah scored at first, divided into two groups: Sarah, me and Lucy. Then, after a few minutes, we scored. When Sarah was about to penalty kick, I looked at my watch and realized it was 4p.m. already. We frantically said goodbye to Sarah and ran as fast our short legs would carry to our house. When we finally arrived home, we heard loud noises, such as squeaking and creepy laughter. Before we got in, I inspected the house. Then, Lucy shrieked at with a high pitched voice. I ran over and saw her pointing at a big rock. I didn’t see anything. “What?” I asked.
“No, not that rock, beside the rock.” Now she was trembling harder then ever. I, seeing it was just a
caterpillar inside a cocoon, said in a calming voice, “It’s just a caterpillar, don’t be scared.”
I went on inspecting again, and this time Lucy followed right behind me. I didn't see anything so peculiar, so I went into the house. Lucy was still following me, so I asked her to search the kitchen.
After she left me, I lurked around the living room, trying to ignore the sqeaky sounds coming from everywhere. It was strange, after all, that mother and father wasn't in the room. I searched the bedrooms, the attic, and even the bathroom for them, but still no sign of them came up. I decided to
go to the kitchen and see how well Lucy was doing. When I got there, Lucy was not moving and to my surprise, she was staring at something with her mouth open, but no words came out of her mouth.
I thought it was another bug and went to sweep it out of the kitchen, but I was wrong.
What I saw was father, lying on the ground, and a sword was sticking out of his back.
TWO
We stared down at father for a terrible moment. How-? My head was confused. Deadly confused. I couldn't stop thinking. My head was going faster and faster by the minute. Then, all thinkings stopped.
I could see what happened. Mother killed him! How could she? Even if father was mean and crazy, this is not how you treat a man! Then, suddenly, we heard cries from the bedroom. A woman, who sounded a lot like my mother, was crying in my bedroom. I was really sure it was mother who killed father,
because- who else would? I started walking toward my bedroom. Then I stopped walking. Come to think
of it, mother can’t kill father! She couldn't kill anyone let alone him! How could a kind hearted woman
like her kill her husband? I couldn't understand. My head was spinning again. Then I became dizzy.
I fell down. Fortunately, Lucy had the courage to open the door of the bedroom, so I left it to her and
pulled myself up. I was so dizzy that I tumbled right into the sofa and got some sleep.
When I woke up, Lucy was standing in front of me, staring at me like I‘d have to get some lecture from father. “Whatssamatter?” I asked, wiping the sleep from my eyes. Sure enough, Lucy led me to my room for some privacy. When we were seated on my bed, Lucy looked as if she’d gotten hit on the face. “What’s the matter?” I asked again. “Janet, this is top secret.” Lucy whispered. She looked around to see if any people were in there. “Lucy, what are you trying to say? Say It quickly, or I’ll go out.”
Lucy took one look at the room, and when she knew coast was clear, she bent down and said in a deep voice. “Mother didn't kill father.” I was dumbfounded. “But, if she didn't kill him, who did?” I asked eagerly. Lucy said again in a deep voice. “The-the p-pixies,” She said this with a lot of fear.
The pixies? What in the world do they have to do with killing? I’ve heard of pixies before! They were in fairy tales when I was seven! They don't even exist! “But you know they don’t exist, Lucy!” I said.
Lucy tusked. “I’ve seen them! Right when you went asleep! I grabbed some and put them in my butterfly cage so you can see!” I huffed. “Then let’s see the proof!” At that, Lucy went over to her bedroom and came back with a butterfly cage. Then she grabbed one pixie and placed it on her hand.
“There! I gave you proof!” I was once dumbfounded, again. “But how do you know that the pixies killed
father?“ I asked. I didn't see any proof again. ” Well, I saw one pixie covered up in blood.“ said Lucy, getting the pixie back into it’s cage. ” and it was beside father,“ She added, shuddering of the horrible memory. I looked into the cage which now was laid on the bed. The pixies were struggling to get out.
“Lucy, can’t you see that they are suffering from the small cage? Let them go.” I said.
Lucy nodded in agreement and went to the window. Then she said, “Hey, what’s this?” staring at a red envelope that was on the windowsill. I got up from my bed and went beside her. “It must be a letter. Open it up.” Lucy opened the envelope and there was a yellow letter. I read it aloud.
“Dear pixies, I’m writing this letter because you couldn't find my new home. Well, it’s at Greenville, New york, so I suppose you’ll find this letter, and come here soon! Your master, James.”
“James? Who’d you’ll think that’ll be?” Lucy asked. I wasn't so sure.
“Well, one time seeing would be nicer that a million listening,” I said as I pulled out my overcoat.
Lucy stared at me. “So, we’ll just go there without even knowing who James is?” She asked.
“Yup. And, anyway, we live near Greenville, why don't we give it a try?” I said. I pulled Lucy’s overcoat too, and we got through the window and followed the pixies. We walked and walked, passing the river and hills, and many many houses. When Lucy was exhausted, the pixies put some pouder on her that kept her walking.
Finally, we reached Greenville and the pixies led them to a building called “James’s house.”
We walked through the building’s long corridors and reached room number 954, which seemed to be
the last door in the building. When we opened the door, a boy my age came to us. “And who are you,
entering my building?“ He asked. He was the same length as me and had a mischievous grin on his face. ”I am Janet Sherbet and this is my sister, Lucy Sherbet.“ I said. The boy looked at the little girl and then fixed his eyes on me again. ”And why have you entered with my pixies?“ He asked.
“Because they killed our father.” Lucy blurted out. I gave her an angry look. The boy looked confused.
THREE
I had a hatred full of face to Lucy. How dare she mention our dead father to a stranger! However, Lucy didn't seem to notice my expression at all, and she also asked a question to the boy. “Are you James? And how old are you?” The boy looked at me with a strange face as if he had noticed my fury at him. “Sorry for my pixies, I’ll scold them later. And as for your question, let’s see, I’m James, and I’m five hundred and sixty-one years old.” He said in a curving voice. I looked at him with astonishment. “What the-?” I started, but I was terribly interrupted by the boy who now had gotten beside me in a flash. “I suppose you have not heard of all the Greenville creatures, young lady,” He said. “All of them, is 50 years old when they are born. And they are 100 years when there are two in your land.” He marked his words with a small ‘click!’ with his fingers. I looked at the boy, or should I say elf, in this situation, because he had a really long nose growing longer and longer. Lucy screamed and hid behind a pile of dirt before you could say ‘that’s gross.‘ I was having a fit too. I mean, how couldn't you be grossed out if you were only ten and a serpent-like thing dressed as a boy comes toward you in a really fast speed? I pulled Lucy out of the dirt pile and ran as fast as we can out of the building. What a strange day it was. I searched for my watch. It was on the floor, when I found it. I shook all the dirt off the watch and looked at the time. It was already 7:30. I grabbed Lucy by the arm and didn't let it go until we were back to our house. When we walked in, mother was in there, crying softly. I went straight to the kitchen and searched for father. When he didn't appear, I went back to the living room and saw Lucy wiping mother’s tears with a handkerchief. I asked Lucy to go to bed so we could have some privacy. She gave one look at the clock and went to her bedroom. I sat on the sofa, next to mother. “Janet, I need some time to rest. Go away.” She said weakly. I didn't move.
“Go, Janet.” She said again. I still didn't move. “Mother, do you know anything about the pixies?” I asked. Mother hesitated for a moment. Then she said slowly, “Yes.” From her trembling voice, I could tell she was feeling guilty about father’s death. “What do you know about?” I asked, checking if she knew anything about James and Greenville. “I know that the pixies killed your father, and I know James is their master.” ‘Wow, she knows all about them.’ I thought. Mother looked at me as if asking for another question. I asked again when I thought up another. “Do you know anything else about James?”
Mother looked at me hard in the eye. Then, her eyes turned green, then blue, and then to bright red.
She stared at me harder and harder. Her eyes began to widen. When she came back to normal, she turned her head. She opened her mouth without looking at me, and spoke. “I know one thing.” I looked at her closely. “James... is really... a dark sorcerer. The sorcerer’s name... is what we do not dare to speak.” She got up from the couch, went to her room, and closed the door.
I froze. That James boy, a sorcerer? That made no sense. I didn't have the courage to get up and open the door to mother’s room and tell her that she was wrong, so I just stayed on the couch, thinking
about that boy and the sorcerer. How could a boy in Greenville become a sorcerer? And a boy who is 561 years old at least? I didn't understand. At all.
FOUR
When I woke up, I knew immediately that I had fallen asleep. I got up and called Lucy. There was no answer. Mother wasn't there, too. When I saw it was 11o’clock, I figured that Lucy and mother went shopping or somewhere else to give me some time alone. I was hungry, so I fixed myself some breakfast. When I was full, I called Sarah and asked her if she could play.
After a few minutes, we met at the park. Sarah asked me why I was so pale. I looked around to see if anyone was around, and when the coast was clear, I pulled on Sarah’s sleeve and led her to the bench. We sat down and I lowered my voice as possible. “My father has been murdered.” I whispered.
There seemed to be a shock on Sarah’s small face. Then, lowering her voice too, Sarah spoke in a squeaky voice. “Who in the world had the courage to kill him?” I sighed. “They were not who, they were it.” Sarah tried to get me to say it faster. “Pixies, Sarah. They were pixies. And their master is
James.“ I whispered. Sarah gasped as if she knew a person named James. ”J-Janet,“ She muttered. ”What?“ ”I know James very well. He is the Sorcerer of the dark. He’s the most powerful person that’s ever- ever lived.“ I stared at her. Then, mother was right! James really was the Dark Sorcerer!
“Really?” I asked, eager to find the answer ‘no,’ but all Sarah did was open her mouth and close it repeatedly.
이번 소설은 꽤 길게 썼네요..... 내용도 좀 시리어스 하고~~...... 마무리는 여전히 안된다는 치명적인 약점이~~~~~ ^^;;;;;
