On Wheels 책 속에서 자동차 보닛을 열어 그 안에 뭐가 있는지 보고, 트럭에 짐을 싣는 걸 도와주고, 터널 어둠 속을 탐험해보세요. 소방차, 경주용 차, 구급차, 불도저, 자전거, 버스도 타세요. 자동차 앞, 뒤에 있는 보닛과 트렁크엔 뭐가 있는지, 주유소에서 들러 뭘 하는지, 캄캄한 터널 안을 통과할 땐 어떻게 해야 하는지, 자동차 경주 트랙은 어떻게 생겼는지 궁금해하는 아이들을 위한 책이에요. 그림 속의 불도저, 덤프트럭, 냉장차, 가축차, 쓰레기차, 이삿짐차, 버스, 구급차, 경찰차, 소방차가 뭘 하고 있는지 관찰하고 타이어가 펑크난 자전거는 어떻게 수리하는 지 살펴보죠. 이 멋진 파란 차의 운전자는 (지금) 매우 조심스러워요. (조심해 운전해요) 세 명의 소중한 승객을 태우고 있지요. *** smart 는 영국영어에서 주로 'neat and clean'(멋진, 말쑥한)의 의미로 사용됩니다. 'Be being '- 원래 be는 정적인 상태를 나타내어 진행형으로 쓰이지 않으나 예외적으로 일시적인 행위임을 강조할 경우 사용되기도 합니다. The American word is trunk. 영국영어에서 차의 boot는 앞, 뒤에 있는 짐 등을 운반하는 뚜껑덮힌 공간입니다. 같은 뜻의 미국식 영어 단어는 트렁크입니다. *luggage - the suitcase, and bags that you take with you when travel 여행시 가지고 다니는 옷가방이나 가방류, 미국에선 주고 baggage라고 함. *bonnet - In British English, the bonnet of a car is the metal cover over the engine at the front. The American word is hood. 영국영어에서 차의 보닛은 앞에 있는 엔진을 덮는 금속 덮개입니다. 미국식 영어단어로는 후드라고 합니다. In the boot, you can see a teddy, a basket, an umbrella, a pair of shoes, suitcases, etc. 트렁크 안에 곰인형, 바구니, 우산, 신발, 옷가방 등이 있네. 길옆에 주유소가 있어요. 운전자들은 연료를 채우고, 오일량을 점검하고, 타이어의 압력이 적당한지 확인하기 위해 여기에 멈춥니다.(차를 세웁니다.) *** 동사 stop 이 to 부정사로 fill up, check, make sure 세 가지를 취하고 있어요. *garage - a place where you can get you car repaired, buy a car, or buy petrol. garage는 차를 수리하고, 차를 사고, 연료를 사는 곳입니다. 여기서는 '(자동차 수리도 하는)주유소'를 뜻합니다. *petrol - In British English, petrol is a liquid which is used as a fuel for motor vehicles. The usual American word is gas or gasoline. 영국영어에서 petrol은 자동차 연료로 사용되는 액체입니다. 미국식 영어단어는 가스 또는 가솔린입니다. 미국영어로는 보통 주유소를 'gas station'이라고 합니다. *tyre - 타이어의 영국식 철자법. It is a tank lorry(truck). 이건 유조차야. This green car is being filled up with petrol. 이 초록색 차는 주유 중이구나. The man seems to check the engine with tools. 이 사람은 공구를 가지고 엔진을 점검하는 것 같아. 봐! 산을 통과하는 터널이야. 터널 안은 매우 캄캄해요. 우리 차는 헤드라이트를 켜야 하고, 다른 차들도 마찬가지야. *** there 는 tunnel을 가리킴. turn on 은 '~을 켜다', turn off 는 '~을 끄다' headlight는 두 개니까 복수형 headlights을 사용. 'so + (조)동사 + 주어 ' : ---도 역시 ~ 하다. 따라서 'so will the other cars'는 the other cars will turn on the headlights, too 입니다. Three cows are grazing in the fields beside the road. 세 마리의 소가 도로 옆 들판에 풀을 뜯고 있구나. And a cat is running around. 고양이 한 마리가 뛰어다니고 있고. The green car driving in the opposite direction have its headlights on, too 반대편에서 마주보고 오는 초록색 차도 헤드라이트를 켜고 있다. 경주용 자동차들이 붕소리를 내며 트랙을 돌고 있어요. 위험하게 굽은 길 주의해요! 경주가 거의 끝나가요. 5번 차가 우승할까요? ***zoom 은 '붕소리내며 달리다'는 뜻으로 'zoom around the course'하면 붕소리내며 코스를 돈다는 의미. watch out은 단순히 be careful 의 의미고, 'watch out for~ '는 look out for와 같은 뜻으로 '~을 알아차릴 수 있도록 주의하라'임. Car number 12 is following after car number 5. 12번 차가 5번차를 뒤따르고 있구나. 부두아래에서 불도저와 덤프 트럭들이 분주해요. 냉장차가 보트에서 내리는 신선한 생선을 기다리고 있어요. *dock - an enclosed area in a harbour where ships go to be loaded, unloaded, and repaired. 배가 짐을 싣고, 내리고, 수리하기 위해 가는 항구에 있는 둘러쌓인 지역. *dumper truck - a truck whose carrying part can be tipped backwards so that the load falls out 운반하는 부분이 거꾸로 기울어져 적재물을 내릴 수 있는 트럭. 미국식 영어단어는 dumper truck. *lorry - a large vehicle that is used to transport goods by road. 육상으로(육로로) 물건을 수송하는 큰 운송차량. 미국식 영어단어는 truck. There are two lighthouses on the coast 해안가에 등대가 두 개 있구나. Lighthouses are used to guide ships or to warn them of danger. 등대는 뱃길을 안내하거나 배에 위험을 알리는데 사용되지. 시골에서 여러분은 아마도 소를 싣는 트럭을 보게 될거에요. 도심에서는 쓰레기차나 이삿짐차를 볼 수도 있지요. *dustcart- a lorry which collects the rubbish from the dustbins outside people's house. 집 바깥에 있는 쓰레기통에서 쓰레기를 수거해가는 차량 미국식 영어단어는 garbage truck. 쓰레기통을 영국식 영어는 dustbin, 미국식 영어는 garbage can 또는 trash can이라고 함. 버스가 사람들이 올라타도록 멈춰서요. 몇 정거장이 지나서 그 사람들은 다시 내리죠. *** they 는 some people (who have get on the bus a few stops before-몇 정거장 전에 탄 사람)을 가리킴. Three people are getting on the bus through the front door. 세사람이 앞문으로 버스를 타고 있구나. 모든 사람들은 소방차가 차량의 통행속을 급히 달려갈 때 길을 비켜야 해요. 구급차와 경찰차가 바짝 뒤따르고 있어요. 싸이렌 소리가 들려요? 삐-뽀 삐-뽀.... *** get out of the way : (방해가 되지 않게) 비키다. 'their sirens '에서 their 는 the fire engine, the ambulance, the police car를 가리킴 A siren is a warning device which makes a long, loud, wailing noise. 사이렌은 길고, 크게, 구슬픈(사이렌소리)소리를 내는 경고 장치야. 이 자전거 타이어에 펑크가 났어요. 타이어를 수리해봐요. 먼저 구멍을 찾기 위해 펑크난 타이어를 물 속에 담궈야 해요. 그 다음엔 땜질을 해 다시 타이어에 공기를 집어넣을 수 있어요. * puncture - a small hole in a car tyre or bicycle tyre that has been made by a sharp object. puncture는 날카로운 물체에 의해 차나 자전거 타이어에 생긴 작은 구멍 유모차, 롤러스케이트, 세발자전거, 자전거엔 바퀴가 몇 개나 있지요? 그리고 오토바이와 스쿠터에는 바퀴가 몇 개 있나요? *** 두 번째 문장 ...and how many wheels 다음에 are there가 생략됨. A skateboard, a scooter. *skateboard - a narrow board with wheels at each end. 양 끝에 바퀴가 달린 폭이 좁은 판 *scooter - a type of child's bicycle which has two wheels joined by a wooden board and a handle on a long pole attached to the front wheel. 어린이 자전거의 한 종류. 나무판에 이어진 두 개의 바퀴가 있고, 앞바퀴에 붙은 긴 막대기 에 핸들이 있다. ( 책 맨 뒤에 나와있는 scooter는 motor scooter로 이것과는 달라요.) This man is walking his dog. 이 사람은 개를 산책시키고 있구나. Some children are playing with the sand. 아이들 몇몇이 모래를 가지고 놀고있네. They are probably going to make a sand castle. 아마도 모래성을 만들려고 하나봐. 미국판 Cars & Trucks 원문 Cars and Trucks and Other Vehicles A shiny blue car drives through the beatiful countryside. Let's see what's inside the car. The boy and his father are going on vavation. Their luggage is packed inside the trunk. The car's working pars should be in tip-top shape for the long drive. In the city, you might see a sanitation truck hauling garbage... ...or a moving van at work. Buses carry many passengers. People get on in the front of the bus. When they arrive at their stop, they exit at the rear. Ambulances, fire trucks, and police cars often drive at full speed on the city streets. They are usually racing to people who need help in a hurry. Weee-ah! Weee-ah!...go the sirens. The loud noise warns pedestrians and motorists to get out of the way! Bicycles are fun to ride...unless you get a flat tire! Let's find out how to repair it. First, remove the tire from the bike. Dip the tire in water to find the hole. Next, glue a patch over the hole, and refill the tire with air! There are all kinds of vehicles-big and small-that move on wheels. Here you see a bicycle, a tricycle, a stroller, a skateboard, roller skates, a scooter... a motor scooter, and a motorcycle... Can you think of other vehicles that move on wheels?
