Designer : Helen Melville Editor : Rachel wardley Illustration by kenneth lilly . ) 98년 영국의 Doling Kindersly (D,K)사에서 My first animal board book으로 처음 출판된 이 책은 My first word Books 시리즈 중 동물에 관한 책입니다. 이 책은 board 북이며 영, 유아가 손으로 넘기기에 크기도 알맞고 견고합니다. 다소 발음하기 어려운 동물은 tape이 포함되어 있어 리듬감 있게 반복적으로 듣고 따라할 수 있습니다. 이 책은 유아를 위한 동물사전이라고 해도 과언이 아닐만큼 아주 이색적인 동물에서 잘 알려진 동물까지 많은 볼거리를 제공합니다. 그리고 동물들의 실물을 사진으로 그대로 옮겨놓아 동물들의 잔털이 어느 방향으로 향하는지 알 수 있을 정도로 삽화가 아주 선명하고 정교합니다. 또한 아이들의 눈높이에 맞추어 Giant, Babies, Powerful, Climbers 등 개성있게 분류하여 또 다른 시각에서 동물들을 이해할 수 있습니다. 그 중 아기동물들과 울음소리, 그리고 외형적인 특징, 색깔별 분류는 아주 흥미롭습니다. 아이들은 “ 이런 동물도 있구나” 할 정도로 동화책에서나 들음직한 보아 구렁이, 초록물고기, 날개 없는 키위새, 토마토 개구리, 리본장어 등등… 그리고 새끼고릴라는 사람 처림 baby라는 단어를 붙여 gorilla baby로 부른다는 사실도 가르쳐 줍니다.
