▶Rooster's Off to See the World
에릭칼의 작품으로 그렇게 많이 소개되는 책은 아니지만 내용이 재미있고, 수를 처음 배우는 아이들에게 자연스럽게 더하고 빼는 것을 함께 가르쳐 줄 수 있어 좋은 것 같아요. 페이지마다 늘어나고 줄어드는 수만큼 해당 동물그림이 그려져 있어 아이들이 한눈에 어느 동물의 수에 변화가 있는지 알 수 있어 어린아이들에게도 충분히 활용이 가능합니다.
내용이 짧은 동화는 아니지만 생활 속에서 쓸 수 있는 표현들이라 좋은 책이 아닌가 싶네요. 누구나 한번쯤은 일상에서 탈출해 훌쩍 여행을 떠나고 싶다는 생각을 하잖아요. 그런 마음을 담고 있는 내용이랍니다.
표지를 쫙 펴 보시면 큰 수탉 한 마리가 떠오르는 아침 햇살을 받으며 걸어가고 있죠. 이제 여행이 시작되는 걸까요? 첫페이지를 열면 똑같은 그림으로 시작됩니다.
어느 화창한 아침, 수탉은 여행을 떠나기로 결심하지요. 그러나 얼마가지 않아 외롭기 시작했어요. 바로 그때 수탉은 고양이 두마리를 만났습니다. 수탉은 고양이들에게 자신과 함께 세상구경을 하자고 말했어요. 고양이들도 좋은 여행이 될꺼라 생각해 수탉과 함께 길을 따라 출발합니다.
그들은 다시 개구리 세마리를 만나 함께 여행가기를 권했고, 개구리 세마리도 여행에 동참하게 되었어요. 한참 뒤 수탉과 고양이들과 개구리들은 거북이 네마리를 만났고, 그들도 여행에 동참하게 되었다. 그리곤 다시 물고기 다섯마리를 만나 함께 여행을 하게 되었어요. 해가지고 어두워지기 시작했고, 지평선 너머로 달이 떠올랐어요.
"저녁은 어디있지?" 고양이들이 물었어요. "잠잘 곳은 어디야?" 개구리들이 물었어요. "너무 추워" 거북이들이 투덜거렸어요. 그때 머리위로 반딧불이 날아올랐어요. "우린 무서워"라며 물고기들이 소리쳤어요. 현재 수탉은 여행에 대한 아무런 계획도 갖고 있지 않았어요.
그는 먹을 것과 잠잘 거처에 대해 생각하지 않았고 친구들에게 대답할 해결책을 알지 못했어요. 몇 분의 침묵이 흐른 후, 물고기들은 집에 돌아가는 것이 가장 났다는 결정을 재빨리 내렸고 다른 친구들이 행복한 여행을 하기를 바라며 돌아갔어요.
거북이들도 따뜻한 집에 대해 생각하기 시작했고, 인사도 하지 않은 채 길을 되돌아 기어갔어요. 개구리들도 여행이 더 이상 즐겁지 않다고 생각했고 집으로 돌아가 버렸어요. 고양이들도 먹다 남겨두고 온 음식을 생각하며 돌아갔고, 수탉은 혼자 남게 되었지요. 결국 수탉도 집으로 돌아와 그 동안의 여행에 대한 행복한 꿈을 꾸면서 잠이 들었습니다.

Look! It has green eyes. What beautiful eyes!
The rooster said to them, "Come along with me to see the world."
The cats liked the idea of a trip very much.
"We would love to." - 'love to'는 'like to'보다 좋아한다는 것을 더 강조하는 표현이죠.

Let's count to them. One two three. Nice job! One plus two is three.
The rooster and the cats met three frogs.
"How would you like to come with us to see the world?" asked the rooster.
"Why not?" answered the frogs.
'why not'도 많이 쓰는 표현인데, 구어에서는 「어째서...해서는 안 되는 것이냐, 해도 괜찮지 않느냐」의 뜻으로 쓰이고 여기서처럼 권유를 받고 답할 때 쓰면 기꺼이 동의함을 나타냅니다.
아이들과도 놀이할 때 써보면 재미있겠죠.

페이지마다 같은 방법으로 더하기를 해보죠.
책에 아이들이 보기 쉽게 늘어나는 동물 수만큼 그림으로 잘 표현되어 있지만 나무블럭이 있다면 블럭에 동물그림을 붙이거나 색깔 등으로 구분하여 여행에 합류하는 동물들을 하나씩 끈으로 연결해주면 더 재미있게 숫자놀이를 할 수 있어요.

Three plus three is six. Terrific! Six animals.
The rooster, the cats, and the frogs saw four turtles crawling slowly down the road.
"Hey, how would you like to see the world?" said the rooster.

As the rooster, the cats, the frogs, and four turtles walked along, they came to five fish swimming in the brook.

Very well! Five fish. The fish came along to see the world.

The sun went down. It began to get dark.
The moon came up over the horizon.

The moon has many shapes. It looks like a circle once in a month.
This is a full moon. I wonder what happened to them.
"Where's our dinner?" asked the cats.
I think so they are hungry.
"Where are we supposed to sleep?" asked the frogs.
"We're cold," complained the turtles.
They don't seem to be joyful.
Do you know why? Because they are very hungry, sleepy, and cold.
Just then, some fireflies flew overhead.
Fireflies with a tail that shines in the dark.
How many fireflies are there? Let's count. One two, ..., ten.
Good, there're ten fireflies.
Now, the rooster really had not made any plans for the trip around the world.
After a few minutes of silence, the five fish headed for home.
Let's subtract. 15 minus five is[leaves] 10.
(Five from 15 leaves 10.) Right! Ten animals.
Which animal is the next? Yes, it's four turtles.
They turned and crawled back down the road without so much as a good-bye.
Let's subtract. 10 minus four is[leaves] six.
(Four from 10 leaves six.) Right! Six animals.
The frogs weren't too happy with the trip anymore, either.
They are jumped away at home.
Let's subtract. Six minus three is[leaves] three.
(Three from six leaves three.) Right! Three animals.
The two cats headed for home, too.
Now the rooster was all alone - and he hadn't seen anything of the world.
Don't lose heart, rooster. Cheer up!
The rooster knew what he had to do.
He turned around and went back home again.
He enjoyed a good meal of grain and then sat on his very own perch.
After a while he went to sleep and had a wonderful happy dream - all about a trip around the world!
