우잉~ 이거 빨랑 올려야 되는 내용인디...요즘 쑥쑥 분위기 땜시 올리기가 민망하네요.
쑥쑥맘들, 그 동안 안녕하셨어요? 정말 3달이 넘도록 침묵을 지켰군요. 오늘 풀어내릴 이야기는 집에서 공부방을 하시거나, 학원 강사를 하시거나, 엄마들끼리 하시는 품앗이 수업을 하거나, 기타 등등 앞으로 진학을 목표로 하고 계시거나 하는 엄마들을 위한 전문적인 정보입니다. 그래서 다소 내용 자체가 보편적이지 못할수 있습니다. 그냥 참고로 하세요.
최근에 전 정말 정신 없이 바쁘게 지내고 있네요. 제 아들 녀석이 만 3돌을 전후로 무지하게 많이 아파서 하던 일을 놓고, 집에서 지낸지가 어언 2년이 되었어요. 작년 이맘때만 해도 애가 언제 또 아플까...기다릴 정도로 덜덜..떨고 살았는데, 올해는 많이 좋아져서 제법 까불고 돌아 다니는 군요.
애가 좀 덜 아프니까, 슬슬...일거리가 밀리고 일도 하고 싶고...기타 등등...일을 하나씩 저지르고 있다보니...몸이 점점 바빠지기 시작합니다. 7월부터 아이들 데리고 수업을 하고 있어요. 열심히 기록을 해나가고 있지요. 이따 쑥쑥엄마들게 쏟아낼려고요.
이번 다이어리는 진작에 올렸어야 하는데, 너무 늦은게 아닌가...정말 죄송스럽게 생각해요. 왜냐하면, 행사가 이번 주말이니까...진짜 늦게 올리는 정보가 되는셈이군요.
1990년도에 학부를 마치고 시작한 일이 바로 학원에서 영어를 가르치는 일이었어요. 키도 작고 얼굴도 작고, 누가 봐도 이제 대학 1-2년 밖에 안보이는 탓에 성인반 영어를 가르치는 일이 정말 어렵고 힘들었어요. 학생들이 절 가지고 논다는 생각을 할때면...으이그....게다가 영어 실력도 짧았으니...(지금은 더 나빠졌습니다만.ㅋㅋㅋ)
거의 매일 밤을 울어댔어요. "이일을 우짜노...." 가르치는 일이 그렇게 매력적이고 체질에 맞다는 걸 깨달았지만, 실력은 짧고 자료는 없고...그 시절엔 "Side by side"가 최고로 유행하던 시절이었는데, 원장님은 달랑 교재 한권만 던져주고 가르쳐 봐라고 하니...무슨 수로 1시간을 떼운단 말인가...
불과 10년전의 일입니다만, 참 난감했었는데, 어느날 신문에서 영어 교사들의 모임에 관한 기사가 눈에 띄어 맨처음으로 대전 한남대학으로 갔던 것이 90년 10월이었지요. 영어를 잘 가르쳐 보고 싶은 욕망으로 가득찬 나에게 그 학술회는 너무나 많은 깨달음을 주었고, 좋은 사람들을 많이 사귈 수 있는 기회를 주었어요. 그 이듬해에 대학원을 진학하게 한 원동력도 되었구요. 대학원 방학마다, 해외 학술회나 세미나, 웍샵에 참여할 수 있는 정보도 풍성하게 얻을 수 있었구요. 저에겐 하느님 이상의 힘을 준 위대한 "학술 모임"이었지요.
원래는 the Association of English Teachers in Korea (AETK) joined with the Korea Association of Teachers of English (KATE)의 단체가 92년도에 합쳐져서 오늘의 KOTESOL이라는 모임이 탄생하게 된거지요. 대학원에서 배우는 것 보다 훨씬 실용적이고, 풍성한 정보와 지식을 얻었습니다. 어언 10년이 되는군요.
이젠 혼자만의 정보로 끼고 둘수만 없습니다. 이 땅의 모든 영어 선생님들이나 영어 교육 관계자들에게 권하고 싶어요. 일년에 한번 이루어지는 이 행사에 모두 참여하여 우리 나라의 영어 교육을 발전시키자고...
현재는 한국인 멤버보다, 외국인들의 숫자가 더 많습니다. 전국적으로 서울, 부산, 대전, 대구, 수원, 청주, 전라 총 7개의 지역으로 나뉘어 매달 모임과 웍샵이 이루어지고 있고, 대개 토요일 오후에 만나서, 1-2개 발표가 있어요. 90% 이상이 영어로 진행되고, 발표자도 대개 영어권 강사나 교사들이 주로 해당됩니다.
연회비는 4만원이고, 회원이 되면 TEC이라는 정기 학회지와 매달 열리는 지역 모임에 참여 할 수 있고, 이메일이나 우편으로 지역 소식지도 받아볼 수 있어요. the Korea TESOL Journal, KOTESOL (Conference) Proceedings, 와 같은 영어 교육 전문가들이 쓴 논문지 등도 받아볼 수 있습니다.
제가 이런 정보를 올리게 되면, 장사하는 게 아닌가 오해도 받겠지만, 받아도 할 수 없습니다. 이 모임 자체는 수익을 목표로 형성된 것이 아니라, 영어 교사들끼리 모여서 영어 교육에 대한 발전을 모색해 보고자 생겨난 모임입니다.
가슴이 아픈 것은 외국인들이 한국인 보다 더 많다는 겁니다. 일례로 일본의 JAlT나 태국의 Thai TESOL같은 경우는 외국인 보다 내국인 회원이 더 많다고 합니다.
우리 나라의 영어 교육을 남의 나라 강사들에게 맡겨 둘수가 없다는게 저의 의견입니다. 요즘 주변을 둘러 보면, 영어 교육을 전공한 사람들의 말보다, 목소리 큰 사람들의 의견을 수용하고 따르는 견해가 많습니다. 저번에 TV에서 조기 유학을 보내야 하나 말아야 하는가에 대한 토론이 이루어 졌을 때, 영어교육학과 교수나 전문가는 보이지 않고, 거의 책을 낸 사람들 내지는 미국에서 오래 살았던 사람들이 나와서 토론이 진행되었던 걸로 기억합니다. 그 분들도 훌륭합니다만, 영어 교육을 전공한 사람도 끼워 넣어주어야 하는데 말입니다. 옛날과 달이 대학의 영어 교육학과에 신흥 세력이 교수들이 많이 생겨나고 있습니다. 20-30년 전엔, TESOL을 전공해서 유학을 다녀오는 교수들이 없었지만, 이제는 거의가 이것을 전공해서 오기 때문에, 실력있는 젊은 교수들이 많습니다.
장기적으로 부작용을 줄이면서, 이 땅의 영어 교육이 이루어지려면 영어 교사들의 노력과 신정보 입수에 발빠르게 움직여야 된다고 봅니다. 요즘은 전공자가 아니더라도 영어를 지도하는 사람들이 많습니다. 좀 더 전문적인 기관에서 체계적으로 가르치려면, 이런 학회 행사에 참여하여 개인의 실력도 키워나가고, 신정보도 참고하여 보다 나은 여건에서 우리 아이들의 영어 교육을 책임져야겠습니다.
90-92년까지 성인반 영어 초급 회화를 지도했습니다. 그 시절엔 대기업 사원들의 인기가 매우 높았지요. 소위 똑똑한 사람들만이 대기업에 취직이 되었습니다. 그러나 출강을 나가보면, 대한 민국 인제들이 모인 이 공간에 영어 때문에 사투를 벌이는 장면을 많이 보게 되었어요. 왜 대학까지 12년의 고등 교육을 받은 사람들이 이 나이가 되도록 퇴근할 시간에 퇴근도 못하고, 점심 먹을 시간에 점심도 제대로 못먹고, 영어 공부 때문에 다시 투쟁을 해야 하는지, 학교 다닐때 영어 공부는 단지 시험 성적 높이는 이유 때문이었고, 다시 직장에서 토익이다, 토플이다...생존을 위한 투쟁을 또 해야 하고, 이중 삼중으로 시간 투자에 영어 교재다 테입이다...금전적인 낭비를 해야하고...
때리치웠습니다. 92년 이후부터는 성인반과는 이별을 하고, 단지 어린이 영어에만 눈을 돌렸습니다. 나 한사람이 가르쳐도 제대로 가르쳐서 이 아이들이 어른이 되었을 때, 두번 다시 이런 시간 낭비, 돈 낭비는 없게 하겠다고 맹세를 했었지요.
그 때 한 맹세는 세월이 흘러도 변하지 않습니다. 가르치는데 대한 경력이 쌓일 수록 이 맹세에 대한 부담이 커집니다.
앞으로 다이어리 말고, 저의 강의록에 개인 체험이 담긴 이야기와 실전 경험을 풀어내릴 계획입니다. 유료화 되어도 쑥쑥을 떠나지 않는 우리 모두가 되길 진심으로 바랍니다.

Korea TESOL: Korea Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (KOTESOL) is a professional organization of teachers of English whose main goal is to assist its members in their self-development and to contribute to the improvement of ELT in Korea. KOTESOL also serves as a network for teachers to connect with others in the ELT community and as a source of information for ELT resource materials and events in Korea and abroad.
Korea TESOL is proud to be an affiliate of TESOL Inc., an international education association of almost 18,000 members with headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, USA.
Korea TESOL was established in October 1992, when As stated in The Constitution and Bylaws of Korea TESOL, "The purpose of Korea TESOL is a not-for-profit organization established to promote scholarship, disseminate information, and facilitate cross-cultural understanding among persons associated with the teaching and learning of English in Korea. In pursuing these goals KOTESOL shall cooperate in appropriate ways with other groups having similar concerns."
KOTESOL is an independent national affiliate of a growing international movement of teachers, closely associated with not only TESOL Inc., but also the Japan Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (JALT), Thailand TESOL (ThaiTESOL), ETA-ROC (English Teachers Assn of the Republic of China/Taiwan), International Association of English Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL), TESL Canada, and most recently with the Far East English Language Teachers Association (Russia).
The membership of KOTESOL includes elementary, middle and high school and university level English teachers as well as teachers-in-training, administrators, researchers, materials writers, curriculum developers and other interested persons. Approximately 40% of the members are Korean. KOTESOL chapters exist in Seoul, Suwon, Chongju, Daejeon, Taegu, Pusan, and Jeolla Province. Members of KOTESOL hail from all points of Korea and the globe, thus providing KOTESOL members the benefits of a multi-cultural membership.
Annual membership in KOTESOL costs 40,000 Won. Benefits include:
- the opportunity to attend any regular meeting of any chapter
- a local chapter KOTESOL newsletter (whichever chapter you officially signed up through)
- the national bimonthly publication The English Connection, keeping you up-to-date with current issues in EFL as well as news of chapter activities, international TESOL affiliate news, cultural issues and more

It is my pleasure to contribute the first of what will be several Conference Columns during my tenure as Co-chair and then as Chair of the KOTESOL Conference Committee. Since we did not have a Conference Column in the last edition of TEC, we have a lot more information to pass on than usual. Therefore, let's just get to it!
First, our 9th International Conference will be held on October 13 and 14 in Seoul, in the Business Centre at Sungkyunkwan University. We will be meeting to consider the theme "The Learning Environment: the Classroom and Beyond." Sungkyunkwan University is an educational institution with a rich history, having its roots in the original Confucian academy in Seoul. It is located in central Seoul, near many of the landmarks of classical Korea. The Business Centre itself is a brand-new facility, only two years old. It has both regular and multi-media classrooms, a Computer Centre, a large theatre, and ample space for people to meet and converse. It is an excellent facility, and we are proud to have our next International Conference there.
Second, we have a number of speakers confirmed who will be joining us at the Conference this year. First, let us mention our plenary speakers:
- Michael Rundell has an extensive background in
lexicography, having worked on a series of dictionaries and
language resources over the past twenty years. He has worked
most recently on the Longman Advanced American
Dictionary (2000), and is now working on helping to develop a
Master's Program in lexicography at the University of Brighton in
the UK. His plenary address will deal with helping learners find the
vocabulary they need.
- Jane Willis is a Teaching Fellow at Aston University in Birmingham, UK. She has published over thirty written works (books, articles, and papers) and has done extensive work on helping develop the task-based approach to language learning. She is currently working on a new book on teaching English to young learners, which will be published this year by Cambridge University Press.
We can also confirm three other featured speakers for the Conference:
- Uschi Felix is Associate Dean for Information Technologies at
Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. She has an extensive
background in both foreign language education and in the use
of technology in language education, and she will be presenting
on the use of information technology in EFL education.
- David Nunan is a well-known authority in the field of English
Language Teaching, currently working at the University of Hong
Kong. He has published numerous books, articles, and papers
on the subject, and he has written the Atlas ELT series. We are
honoured to have him as a featured speaker this year.
- Steve Gershon is Associate Professor at Obirin University in Tokyo, Japan. He has co-authored course book and listening resources, and will be speaking on the topic "Culture Activities in the Classroom: Windows and Mirrors".
Third, we are now in the process of receiving abstracts from prospective presenters. It is my hope that we can have proposals from a variety of presenters, showing the vibrancy and variety of ELT activity here in Korea. In particular, I know that there are a growing number of teachers in this country who are doing graduate degree programs in ELT and applied linguistics by distance education with reputable educational institutions in the United States, the UK, and Australia (in fact, I was one of them until recently!). If you are a student in such a program, I urge you to consider adapting one of your recent essays or assessment tasks into a presentation for the Conference. People who are in these degree programs are involved in action research, and often base their essay work on observing what actually happens in their classrooms. This work can be the source of important activities and insights that will help both students and teachers.
Finally, our Conference Committee is now up and running (see the committee page for details). We wish to put on a truly memorable Conference that will be beneficial for our members. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please direct them to us. We want to be as helpful as possible.
