할로윈은 서양의 대표적인 명절 중 어린이를 위한 축제라 할 수 있습니다.
할로윈이 되면 아이들은 요정, 마녀, 유령과 같은 가장을 하고 집집마다 돌아다니며 “과자를 주지 않으면 장난을 치겠어요(Trick or treat)라고 으름장을 놓으며 사탕, 과자, 초콜렛 등을 얻어간답니다. 그런데 이렇듯 신나는 할로윈은 그렇게 재미있게 시작된 것은 아니랍니다. 우리 함께 할로윈에 숨겨진 무시무시한 역사를 알아보아요!

When is Halloween?
That’s right. October 31st.
Halloween is one of the children's favorite holidays in U.S.A. Nowadays, some celebrate Halloween in Korea, too.Children dress up in costumes like witches, devils, pirates, ghosts, or other characters whatever they want.
Then they wander the neighborhood trick-or-treating.
"Trick-or-treating" is that children demand to be given candies or threaten to play tricks.

But do you know how Halloween began?
Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).
The Celts celebrated the beginning of winter on the evening of October 31st. They believed that death was strongly linked to the long and bitter winter. They thought the sprits of who has died that year would come back looking for living bodies to possess on October 31. To not be possessed, people put out the fires, dressed up in scary costumes so the sprits would be frightened away.
That is the origin of Halloween.

오늘은 할로윈에 대해 이야기를 나누어 보자.
할로윈은 언제일까?
맞았어. 10월 31일이이지.
할로윈은 미국 어린이들이 가장 좋아하는 명절 중 하나야.
요즘에는 한국에서도 할로윈을 즐기곤 한단다.
아이들은 마녀나, 악마, 해적, 유령 등 자기가 원하는 캐릭터의 옷을 입고 가장을 한단다.
그리고 이웃집을 돌아다니며 trick or treating을 하러 다니지.
trick or treating이란 사탕을 주지 않으면 혼내주겠다고 으름장을 놓으며 과자나 사탕을 얻어가는 것을 말해.

그런데 할로윈이 어떻게 유래했는지 알고 있니?
할로윈은 고대 켈트지방의 추수감사 축제에서 유래했단다.
켈트인들은 겨울이 시작되었음을 10월 31일 밤에 축하하곤 했단다. 그들은 죽음은 길고 추운 겨울과 강하게 연결되어 있다고 믿었어. 그리고 그 해 죽은 사람들의 영혼들이 다른 사람의 몸으로 들어오기 위해 돌아온다고 믿었단다.
몸을 빼앗기지 않기 위하여 사람들은 불을 지피고, 무서운 옷을 입고 분장을 했단다. 영혼들이 겁을 먹고 도망가게 말이야.
그게 할로윈의 유래야.

The Irish once carved out beets, potatoes and turnips to use as lanterns on Halloween.
아일랜드에선 비트나 감자, 순무를 파내어서 할로윈 등으로 이용하기도 했습니다.
People were placed outside their homes on All Hallow’s Eve to ward off evil spirits.
요즘에 악령을 쫓아내기 위해 할로윈 밤 집 밖에 놓아두었습니다.
Nowadays we carve out pumpkins.
요즘에는 호박을 이용하여 만듭니다.

To avoid being recognized by ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits.
유령들이 알아보는 것을 피하기 위해 사람들은 날이 저문 이후 집 밖으로 나갈 때 가면을 착용하곤 했습니다. 그래서 유령들이 사람들을 마치 동료 유령인 것처럼 속이려 말입니다.

Trick or Treat

Trick-or-treating, also known as guising, is an activity for children on Halloween in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as candy with the question, "Trick or treat?"
가장행렬로도 알려진 Trick or treating은 할로윈 때 아이들을 위한 행사입니다. 아이들은 분장을 하고 “사탕을 줄테냐? 아님 괴롭힘을 당할테냐?”라는 질문과 함께 사탕과 같은 간식거리를 요구하며 집집마다 돌아다닙니다.

Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Halloween.
