영어로 글을 쓰는 방법은 세가지가 있어요.

1) 한국어로 먼저 생각한후 영어 표현을 생각해본다.

2) 바로 영어로 생각나는 대로 쓴다.

3) 한국어로 써놓은 후에 영어로 바꿔보려고 노력한다.(번역)

셋 중에 뭐가 좋은 방법일까요? 뭐가 안좋은 방법일까요?

일단 (3)번은 안좋은 방법이에요. 시간이 많이 걸리고, 결코 좋은 영문장이 나오지 않아요. 영어식 사고방식과 한글식 사고방식은 시작부터 아주 달라요. 출판업계에서는 흔히 번역체라는 말을 많이 하는데요. 번역체 문장은 영어를 한글로 한글을 영어로 바꾼 티가나는 문장이에요. 안좋은 문장이지요. 아주 아름다운 문체로 쓴 영어글도, 한글로 옮겨 놓으면 딱딱 끊어지고 어색하고 전혀 아름답지 않아요. 그만큼 언어와 언어사이에는 차이가 있고요. 한글로 쓴다음 영어로 완벽하게 번역을 해도, 멋있는 영어문장이 되지는 않아요.

(2)번은 좋은 방법이지만, 고수들만 할 수 있지요. 초보자, 중수가 이 방법으로 쓰다보면, 쉬운 문장만 골라 쓰게 되고, 결국 초등학생이 쓴 글처럼 되어 버리지요. 내용이 풍부하지 않고, 표현이 단순하게 되기 마련이에요. 좋은 글이 좀처럼 나오지 않지요.

(1)번이 초보자, 중수에게 제일 좋은거 같아요. Tip을 하나 드리지요. 쓰고 싶은 내용을 문장단위가 아닌, 아이디어 단위로 한글로 적어놓은 다음, 그 아이디어를 충실히 영어로 다 전달할 수 있도록 열심히 써 보는 것이지요.

예를 들어서, 맥도널드가 6월부터 음료 refill을 안해준다고 발표했는데요, 거기에 대해서 글을 써 볼께요.

(1단계) 글을 구상할때,

나는 여기에 찬성 -> (맥도널드가 refill안해준다고, 6월부터, 오늘 발표)

이유

1) 애초에 refill해줄 의무가 있는건 아님

2) 줄 서서 기다리고 있는데, refill해 주느라 더 오래 기다리게 되면 짜증남

3) 탄산음료 많이 먹는거 건강에 안좋음

4) 얌채족들 짜증나

(2단계) 영어로 쓴다음,

(기사 인용) McDonald's Korea will no longer offer free soda refills at all of its outlets nationwide. The change will take effect June 1. The decision was made for citing costs and operational efficiency. ``It is a strategic business decision we made not only to cut costs, but more particularly to service our customers better,'' company spokeswoman Kim Ju-young said Wednesday.

(내 생각) I agree on McDonald's recent decision not to offer free soda refills.

Mcdonald and others like Lotteria, Burger King and KFC don't have the responsibility at the first place.

Soda, as widely-known, is not healthy food.

Some people order one cup and refill. There are big-size set menu ready for those who want to drink more. If some order small-size menu and make others wait because he/she needs refill, I think it's kind of cheating and taking advantage of kindness at the price of other people's time and patience.

(3단계) 영어글을 스스로 다듬어요.

I personally welcome McDonald's recent decision not to offer free soda refills, effective from June 1. I fully agree the main purpose of this decision must be to service their customers better. As a frequent customer, I find it's annoying when I have to wait for a longer time due to other customers who claim refills. There are big-size set menus ready for those who want to drink more. But some people think they are smart as they order small-size menu and then get free refill. I want to describe their action rather devious and sly than smart. I think it's kind of cheating and taking advantage of kindness at the price of others' time and patience. I hope the courageous decision of McDonald's will practically enhance their service quality and shorten the average waiting time.

글을 쓰면서, 처음 생각했던 "전달하고자 했던 message"를 convey할 적당한 sentence가 생각나지 않으실때는, 쉬운문장으로 바꾸는 타협보다는, 새로운 표현과 단어를 찾아보는 도전을 시도하세요. 계속 도전하세요. 이렇게 써 나가다 보면 자연히 사전도 많이 찾아보게 되고, 자기 표현이 맞는지 틀리는지, 더 좋은 표현은 없는지 계속 생각하게 되니까 실력이 쑥쑥 올라가고, 점점 자연스런 영어글쓰기가 완성되어 갈 거에요.
