음...게시판 분위기가 좀 춥군요. 이 시점에서 제가 좀 끼어 들겠습니다만, 참 조심스럽네요. 맞아 죽을 각오하고 글을 올려야 되는지...왜 이리 초등게시판도 아닌 유아 게시판에서 "파닉스"에 대해 뜨거운지...많이 안타깝습니다. 저도 한동안은 이러구 저러구...파닉스에 대한 글을 올렸었는데, 아시죠? 다람쥐 쳇바퀴 돈다고...비슷한 글 또 올리고, 또 올리기 뭐해서...그냥 내비두는 거...
웬만하면, 유아 때는 그냥 읽고, 쓰는 거 잊고 사시라고 말씀 드리고 싶네요. phonics라고 딱히 강조하기 보다는, phonetic awareness를 길러야 할 적기잖아요. 우리말과 영어의 차이 나는 소리를 인지할 수 있고, 그 소리와 사물을 보고
연결할 수 있고, 그 소리에 대한 글자를 찾을 수 있고...6세 7세 아이들이 영어로 꼭 글을 읽어야 한다고 헌법에 나와 있지도 않은데, 꼭 그래야만 하는 것처럼 마음이 급하신지...아이의 입에서 영어가 한마디도 안 나와도, 영어로 된 노래 비디오 책을 접해 주었을 때 거부하지 않고, 즐길 수 만 있어도 반은 성공한 조기 교육이라고 생각합니다.
한글 공부를 예를 들자면, 그냥 통문자로 자연스럽게 '무지개'를 익히는 추세이지, 386 세대인 제가 한글을 배울때 처럼, ㅁ에 ㅜ가 와서 '무'가 된다고 요즘 아이들은 배우지 않습니다. 마찬가지로 영어에서도 어린이들의 연령이 어릴수록 '통글자'로 노출을 시키고, 소리를 분절하고 짤라서 배우는 파닉스는 고학년이 되어도 영어를 제대로 못 읽는 아이들에게 사용하면 좋다고 봅니다.
어린이 영어 하면, 무조건 알파벳을 먼저 외워야 된다는 생각은 좀 단편적인 면입니다. 나이가 들어 학교에 가서 글을 못 읽는 사람이 소수이듯이 단순히 글자의 모양을 보고, 읽는다고 그 언어를 다 소화하고 사용할 줄 안다는 것은 아닙니다. 제가 가끔, 유아들에게 파닉스를 가르치지 말자라고 하는데요, 이 뜻은 전혀 문자를 배제한 교육을 하라는 뜻이 아닙니다. 파닉스는 분명 철자를 분해하고, 조합하는 형식의 일련의 rule이 있으며, 이런 룰들은 다소 반복을 통하여 학습해야 하는 부분이고, 무의식적(unconscious)하기 보다는 의식적(conscious)인 부자연스러움이 있습니다. 제 2 언어도 모국어처럼 하나 하나 따져 가면서, 의식적으로 배우기 보다는 무의식적으로 접하고, 익힐 때 모국어 화자처럼 자연스럽게 그 언어를 익힐 수 있다고 봅니다. 어릴 수록 이런 원리가 더 잘 먹힙니다. 초등 입학하기 전인 유아기 때가 이런 원리를 가장 잘 활용할 때 입니다.
점차 아이들이 성장하면서, 못 읽고, 못 쓰는 경우보다 배경 지식과 상식이 부족해서, 또는 여러 명과 어울릴 수 있는 사회성이 결여 되어 의사 소통이 안 되는 경우가 더 큰 장애가 될 수 있습니다. 단 시간에 뿌리를 뽑겠다는 생각 보다, 멀리 최소한 10년 정도의 장기 안목으로 아이들 영어 교육을 바라 보면 안될까요?
파닉스...파닉스...파닉스... 에 관한 논의는 그 찬/반 여론이 나라 마다, 사람들마다 다양하다고 봅니다. 이론적으로 객관적으로 여러 가지 논거 자료들이 있지만, 받아 들이는 사람마다, 그 방법과 사용 목적이 다를 수 있습니다.
유나 엄마의 글을 다 읽은 것은 아니지만, 처음 보았을 때 2가지 면에서 좀 놀랐습니다. 첫째는, 엄마의 그 노력과 열정이 너무 돋보였고, 둘째는 한글 토달고, 직독직해 식의 해석까지 달아 놓은 것에 놀랐습니다. 저는 늘 그런 엄마나 선생님들을 높이 평가합니다. "자기 나름대로 소신과 긍지를 가지고 노력하고 실천하는 사람..." 유나 엄마가 그런 분인 것 같아 좀 방법이 남달라도 그렇게 평가했었습니다. 그 뜨거운 노력과 열정과 땀...정말 돋보였습니다.
그러나, 유나 엄마도 다른 자료들도 좀 살펴 보시고, 다양한 교재나 자료들을 유나에게도 좀 사용해 보시라고 권하고 싶습니다. 영어 교육에 딱히, "정답"은 없습니다. 내가 맞다고 생각하는 것을 아이에게 해 봤더니, 효과적이었다고 말한다면 그것도 정답의 범위에 들어갈 수도 있습니다. 그러나, 될 수 있으면, '객관적"인 자료나 방법을 서로 공유하는 것이 더 효과적일 수 있습니다.
