Horrible Science #9. The Fight for Flight

1. How can a plane fly? How do their wings work? Write its principle. (see 14~15p)

Some air pushes the plane up and down. And plane¡¯s tail and wings control them.

Then the air pressure under the wing lifts the wing higher to fly the sky.

Plane stays up with the help of tiny air molecules.

2. Why can¡¯t humans fly? What are the differences between birds and humans? (see 26p)

Human¡¯s body is too heavy to fly as birds. Birds have feathers powerful chest and muscles, lightweight bones, and air spaces store extra air to breathe but human don¡¯t.

(If human can fly, we must need very big wings to carry us.)

3. How do hot-air balloons fly? Why did Pilâtre de Rozier fail on his mission? (see 47p, 56p)

There are two airs, hot airs and cold airs they convection each other so the hot air goes up and cold air goes down. And if you heat the air more high, the hot-air balloon goes up and up.

But if you don¡¯t heat the hot- air balloon, it¡¯ll goes down and down.

4. What is a petrol engine? Who invented it? How does it work? Write the details. (see 79p)

A petrol engine is an internal combustion engine with spark-ignition, designed to run on petrol and similar volatile fuels. It was invented by German inventor Nicolaus August Otto in 1876.

It¡¯s convenience to use and almost everybody in the world use this engine.

5. Write the record that Wright brother¡¯s made with Flyer 2 and Flyer 3. What were their problems? (see 89~90p)

Flyer 2 and 3 flied 66km and reached the dizzy height of 110meters. The problem were the planes had no brakes, no undercarriage wheels, no safety belts.

6. Write three of the facts listed in the book that you find interesting. Why is the tail rotor important in the helicopter? (see 96~99p)

The tail rotor is important in helicopter because if a helicopter had one set of rotors it would spin the opposite direction as the blades and everyone would get sick.
