Before Reading

1. Look at the front cover.

(1) What is the title?

(2) How is the princess in the picture different from Princess Katie?

Daisy has longer hair and wears a skirt and pumps

while Katie has pants and boots.

(3) Do you see any dragon in the picture? No.

Are you wondering how the dragon will appear in the princess academy? Yes.

2. Look at the back cover.

(1) Why is Princess Daisy terrified?

Because a real dragon is being brought into the academy.

(2) Do you know the meaning of ‘a scaredy cat’? What does it mean?

No. I will figure it out while reading.

Yes. It means a person who is easily get scared.

10	Anything ~ makes my knees wobble.	뭐라도 크고 사나운 건 내 무릎을 떨리게 만든다. (다리가 jelly같이 된다는 표현도 씁니다.)
12	You could have heard a pin drop.	작은 핀이 하나 떨어졌어도 그 소리가 들릴 만 했다. (사방이 고요하다는 의미로 많이 씁니다. 용이 온다는 말에 소녀들이 놀라서 일시에 고요해졌군요.)
13	Fairy G - who is much too huge to sweep - stamped after her.	(교장인 여왕은 날씬하고 우아해서 사뿐히 나갔지만) 너무나 등치가 커서 사뿐히 걸을 수 없는 Fairy G는 쿵쾅거리며 그 뒤를 따라나갔다.
14	Perfecta pretended to give a bored yawn.	P는 지루하다는 듯 하품을 하는 척 했다. (다들 흥분하고 두려워하는데 자기는 이미 다 안다는 태도)
16 17	I expect it’ll be a very old dragon that can’t even breathe fire anymore	내 예상으로는 아주 늙어서 더 이상 불도 못 뿜는 용일 걸. (Sophia는 교장선생님이 너무 무서운 용을 학교에 들이게 할 리가 없다고 생각합니다.)
18	I looked at the toast lying untouched on my plate.	손도 대지 않는 채 접시에 놓여있는 토스트를 보았다.
18	Some people are such scaredy cats.	“누구 누구는 겁쟁이래요~~” P가 Daisy를 놀리는 표현인데 딱 한 사람 만 겨냥하지 않는 척 복수의 주어를 써서 말합니다.

Ch 1 Answer Key to Comprehension

1	What is the problem that the main character has? She doesn’t want others to know she is scared of many things. She doesn’t like to be called a scaredy cat.	9
2	What is King Percival going to do today? He is going to bring in a dragon and teach the princesses on how to talk to dragons.	12, 13
3	Why was Perfecta left back in the first year at the academy? Last year she only got about a hundred tiara points in the whole year. Queen Gloriana was furious with her so she had to come back in the first year.	14
4	Why did Daisy get hiccups when Queen Gloriana talked about King Percival? Because she got so frightened. When she got frightened she got hiccups.	10
5	The princesses in Rose Room talked about the dragon they would see soon. What did Sophia and Charlotte say? Charlotte said the dragon should be huge and ferocious. But Sophia expected it would be a very old dragon that could not even breathe any more.
6	How did Perfecta tease Daisy? Behind her she said, “Some people are such scaredy cats!”
7	What do you think about the academy in the story? Write the differences between the academy and your school. 공주학교와 자기 학교와의 차이점에 대해 씁니다. (예시) - The students are all princesses/girls. - The head person is a queen. - It has boarding rooms. - The students eat breakfast at school. - Magic is seen in the school.

Ch 2 Sentences

19	She says it’s not the place for princesses~	우리집 요리사는 부엌이란 공주가 있을 곳이 아니라면 나무주걱을 휘둘러 나를 내보낸다.
19, 20	Luckily, Queen ~just in case we don’t live happily ever after.	여왕께서는 우리가 영원히 잘 살게 되지 못할 경우를 대비해 직접 요리할 수 있어야 한다고 생각하신다. ‘happily ever after’는 동화에 나오는 해피 엔딩의 전형적인 표현.
20	I was so busy worrying ~ what temperature we should set the oven to.	(용에 대해) 걱정하느라 너무 바빠서 빅토리아 여사가 오븐을 온도를 몇 도에 맞추라고 하셨는지 듣지 못했다.
20	Who needs the fire brigade, then? ~	“누가 소방대를 필요로 할까나?” P와 F가 킬킬거렸다. (D의 케익이 새카맣게 탔기 때문에 놀리는 표현)
22	~as Lady V tippy-toed over to us.	V여사가 우리한테 엉거주춤 걸어올 때 (굉장히 높은 구두를 신어서 걷는 모습이 불안정하다는 뜻입니다.)
25	You could almost see her ears flapping.	(파티라는 말에) F의 귀가 쫑긋 서는 게 보일 지경이었다.
25	a mountain of fairy cakes iced with pearly pink icing.	Percival 왕께 분홍 반짝이 장식의 요정케익을 산더미처럼 드릴 계획이었단다.
26	under her breath she muttered, “and I didn’t cheat like scaredy cat Daisy.	P가 작은 소리로 “난 겁쟁이 Daisy 처럼 속임수도 쓰지 않았다고.” 하면서 투덜거렸다.
28	a cardboard cut-out one	작년에는 용이 새끼를 낳아서 데려올 수 없어 도화지로 잘라 만든 용을 대신 들고 수업에 왔다.

Ch 2 Answer Key to Comprehension

1	Princesses don’t have to cook. Why does Queen Gloriana think the princesses should have the cooking class at the academy? She thinks they should know how to cook just in case they don’t live happily ever after. Some Royal Families are poor and can’t afford cooks.
2	Daisy’s cakes came out totally black. What happened and why? She was so busy worrying about the dragon that she didn’t listen when Lady V told us what temperature we should set the oven to.
3	What made Lady V disappointed and worried? She had planned to present the king with a lot of pretty fairy cakes but the cakes the princesses made were not good at all.
4	Why did Lady V take two minus points from Perfecta? Because she called out her very boastfully.
5	Do you bake cakes sometimes? Draw several cupcakes good enough for King Percival’s Celebration Party. 왕의 파티에 보낼만한 멋진 케익을 그리세요.
6	The princesses went to the Tower Room very slowly and hesitated before they went through the doorway. How do you act when you do something you feel afraid of or you don’t want to? You don’t have to write. Just think and talk with your parents. 공주들이 용이 있는 방으로 가면서 무섭기 때문에 아주 천천히 망설였습니다. 두렵거나 하기 싫은 일을 해야 할 때 자신은 어떻게 행동하는지 쓰세요. 글로 쓸 필요 없습니다. 그냥 생각해보고 부모님과 얘기 나누세요.
