* puff 훅 불다. puffer는 '훅부는 것' 즉 칙칙폭폭 소리를 내는 증기기관차. 기차를 '칙칙이 폭폭이' 정도로 부르는 귀여운 말이 되겠죠?
* belly 불룩한 배. 기관차가 불룩하게 배가 튀어나온 모양이잖아요. 즉, puffer belly는 배가 불룩하게 튀어나오고 칙칙폭폭 소리를 내는 귀여운 열차의 모양을 표현한 말.

* 활용 tip!
이 노래를 부를 때 Carter와 Casey의 동작을 유심히 살펴보세요. "pull the little handle" 할 때는 손을 위로 들고 뭔가를 잡아당기는 시늉을 하지요. "Chug, chug, toot, toot! Off we go!"할 때는 출발하는 동작을 하고요. 이 노래를 아이와 함께 부를 때 이 동작을 강조해서 함께 해주면 아이도 재미있어하고 또 가사의 뜻을 짐작할 수 있어 좋아요. 특히 'pull'을 발음할 때 잡아당기는 동작을 강조해서 시작해주고, 'off we go!'를 할 때 출발하는 모습을 강조해주세요.

* lean against 기대다 (무언가를 향해, 등을 대고 기댈 때 전치사는 against를 씁니다.)
* work는 '일하다'의 뜻을 가졌지만 여기서는 '효과가 있다. 일이 잘 되다'의 의미로 쓰이죠.
* enough to (-할만큼 충분히 -하다)
I have enough money to buy it.(그것을 살만큼 충분한 돈이 있다.)
I am strong enough to lift it.(나는 그것을 들어올릴 만큼 충분히 힘이 세다.)
이때 명사가 올 때와 형용사가 올 때의 enough의 어순이 다름을 유의해주세요.

오프닝 부분의 Carter와 Casey의 대화는 이후 줄거리를 풀어나가는 데 중요한 단서를 제공하는 많은 복선을 깔고 있습니다. 우선 말 인형이 자꾸 넘어져서 울타리에 기대어 놓게 되는 것은 나중에 이 말이 바로 'Old Gray Mare'라서 늙고 힘없어 울타리에 기댈 수밖에 없다는 이야기로 발전합니다. 이는 당연히 노래가사를 줄거리로 끌어들이기 위한 위씽 특유의 장치죠. 나무가 기울어서(tipsy) 문제인 것은 후반부에 기차 레일 위에 나무가 쓰러져 있는 상황과 연결되고요. 또 모닥불이 크게 만들어진 것은 곧이어 카우보이를 만났을 때 이들이 불이 너무 세서 더워죽겠다는 식으로 이야기를 하는 부분과 이어집니다. 또 검정새 한 마리가 삐딱하게 기울어 있는 것은 나중에 새들을 만났을 때 Jack역할을 하는 새가 Jill역할을 하는 새에게 항상 기대어 코를 골고 잔다는 식의 이야기가 됩니다. 공주에게 문제가 있는 것은 곱슬거리는 머리가 반듯하게 빗겨지지 않는다는 것을 말하는 데 나중에 공주와 개구리 장면을 보면 무척 미인인 공주의 머리가 아주 우스꽝스럽게 헝클어져 있죠? 이는 공주의 약간 푼수기 있는 성격을 암시하는 장치가 되기도 합니다.

* Chugalong은 칙칙 폭폭 덜커덩 하는 기차소리를 흉내낸 말인데 여기서는 기관차의 이름입니다. Cubby는 승무원차의 이름이고요. 여기서 이 기차의 기관차(엔진이 있는 앞부분)와 승무원차는 주요 등장인물이지요. 기관차인 Chugalong은 기관차답게 어른스럽고 사리분별이 밝은 맏형이고 Cubby는 승무원차(caboose) 즉 조수인 만큼 조금 귀엽습니다. 아직 초보티가 나서 연기를 내뿜을 때 Chugalong처럼 음표를 맘대로 만들진 못하죠. 이 두 캐릭터의 성격에 맞게 얼굴 모양과 목소리도 그럴싸하게 설정이 된 것 같아요.

* 여기서부터 터스키의 덤벙대는 성격이 드러나지요. 터스키는 시종일관 이렇게 덤벙대다가 다치고 물의를 일으킵니다. 터스키가 또 어떤 사고를 칠까 주의깊게 살펴보는 것도 이 비디오를 감상하는 포인트 중의 하나죠?

Tusky : Oh, guys, look! Good try, Cubby! (와. 얘들아. 저것 좀 봐. 커비. 너도 잘했어!)

* 이 부분은 커비가 연기를 뿜는 장면인데요. 커비는 처걸롱에 비해 아직 연기로 음표 모양을 만들지는 못합니다. 나중에 여행이 다 끝났을 때 커비가 드디어 음표모양을 만들지요? 이 부분도 나중을 위해 눈여겨볼 만합니다.

Cater&Casey : Wow, this is pretty. Wow, look at the tunnel.
(와. 예쁘다. 와. 저 터널좀 봐.)

* superific terrific의 변형으로 어린이들이나 젊은이들 사이에서 쓰이는 일종의 속어. 우리말로 하면 짱이다, 대빵 좋다 같은 거.... 여기서 superific은 터스키가 버릇처럼 쓰는 단어입니다. 터스키의 귀엽고 천방지축인 성격을 드러내는 대표적인 단어죠. 위씽 투게더에서 Jonathan이 계속해서 Outrageous!를 연발하는 것과 비슷한 경우라고 볼 수 있겠네요.

*range 범위, 구역
* 여기서는 카우보이들이 소를 키우는 넓은 방목장을 의미합니다. 아주 미국적인 공간입니다. 위씽 기차여행은 다분히 미국적입니다. 미국 개척 초기의 농촌, 농장, 목장, 학교, 보안관 등 서부영화에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 장면들이 아주 많이 등장하죠. 우리에겐 조금 낯설 수도 있고요. 미국 아이들에게는 매우 역사적인 비디오겠죠. 이 점을 유의해서 보는 것도 포인트입니다. 미국의 옛 모습을 볼 수 있고 또 아이들에게도 그 점을 설명해가며 보면 좋겠죠.
