Before Reading

Think about the following questions before and while reading.

1. Look at the title.

(1) What is the series title?

The series title is Rockets My Funny Family

(2) Let’s see what the word boneshaker means. It is made up with [bone + shake + er].

Can you guess its meaning? What it would be like if you rode a boneshaker bike?

I think it means something that makes a bone shaking. It goes with a bicycle here.

So it is a very old bicycle If I rode it it would be very shaking, making me wobbly.

2. Look at the front cover.

(1) Who should be the man?

I think he is Grandad.

(2) What in the picture interests you?

The old man is riding a bike like a child.

3. Look at the back cover.

(1) Who were ‘we’ here?

The main character or the story teller and his grandfather.

(2) How did they have fun?

They had fun making the old bike go again.

(3) Is the text telling the whole story?

No. It only introduces the beginning of the story.

We should read through the book to know how the story goes.

주의: 직접대화를 표시할 때 큰 따옴표가 아니고 작은 따옴표를 쓰였는데

우리가 글을 쓸 때는 큰따옴표를 쓰는 것이 맞습니다.

Ch 1 Sentences

P	Sentence
4	garden gnomes	gnomes =작고 기괴하게 생긴 상상 속의 생명체. 그런 작은 석상을 마당에 장식으로 씁니다.
6	You never know when it might come in handy.	“언제 이게 쓸모가 있게 될는지 모르는 거잖아.” 노인들이 물건을 버리지 않고 쌓아놓을 때 하는 말이죠.
7	I came across a rusty old bicycle.	나는 우연히 낡고 녹슨 자전거를 보았다/마주쳤다.
8	Bless me!	좋은 일로 놀라울 때 쓰는 표현.
8	If it isn’t my old boneshaker bicycle!	“이거 이거 내 케케묵은/구형 자전거 아냐!” boneshaker는 자전거 앞에 붙여서 구형 자전거라고 할 때 쓰인답니다.
9	Let’s get it going again.	이거 다시 가게 만들어요.
9	You’d be able to get out and about more.	“할아버지께서 집에서 나와 바깥 활동을 더 많이 하실 수 있을 거예요.”

10	It’s lucky the tool kit was still in the saddle bag.	수리용구가 아직도 자전거에 부착된 가방에 있다니 다행이네요.
12	They say you never forget how to ride a bicyble.	“사람들이 자전거는 한 번 배우면 잊지 않는다더니.” 수십 년 만에 타려니 잘 안되자 하는 말입니다.

Ch 1 Answer Key to Comprehension

1	Who are the two important characters? Write their relationship. The boy and the old man. They are grandfather and grandson.
2	How did Grandad’s house look? There are all the statues and gnomes in his garden. His house is full of junk. Form top to bottom it is crammed with fascinating things. Even his garden shed is full of junk.
3	How did Grandad and the boy mend the old bike? 문장 속의 we를 they로 바꿔 쓰는데 유의하세요. They dusted it down and cleaned it up. They mended the punctures and pumped up the tyres. They polished up the saddle and washed down the mudguards. They checked the brakes and oiled the wheels.
4	You saw Grandad’s garden, its shed and house. Imagine how his bedroom looks like and draw it. 할아버지네 마당, 창고, 집 그림을 봤으니 그 할아버지 주무시는 침실은 어떨지 상상해서 그리세요. 낡은 시계, 전화, 그림, TV, 쿠션 등이 여러 개 꽉차 있을 듯 한데 아이들 생각은 어떨지 궁금하네요.
문장 뜻 추측	문맥에서 내용을 추측해보고 사전을 찾든지 여기 정답과 맞춰보세요. 추측이 맞았는지 동그라미 치세요. Expression: You’d be able to get out and about more. Guess: If you have a bike, you would be able to get out of the house and take part in some social meetings more. If you have a bike, you could be able to move around more easily. 15	I could see he was finding it hard going.	가는 게 어렵다고 느끼시는 게 보였다. 할아버지가 자전거로 (오래) 달리기는 어렵다고 느끼시는 걸 내가 (멀리서) 보아도 알 수 있었다.
16	car boot sale	여럿이 모여 중고품을 내놓고 파는 행사. 미국에서는 garage sale이라고 합니다. boot fairs, jumble sale, flee market 모두 second-hand goods sales와 관련이 있습니다.
19	It’s just what I need for my mantelpiece.	이건 내 벽난로 위에 딱 필요한 거네.
21	Oh, that’s a shame	실망스러울 때 쓰는 표현.
22	Grandad was a little take aback.	할아버지께서 약간 놀라셨다.
24	He must be batty offering me ~	그런 액수를 제안하다니 돌았나보네.
25	I could do with a cup of tea!	차 한잔 필요해./마셔야겠다. 반대는 do without = 없이 지내다.
27	Grandad was so lost in thought I don’t think he heard me.	할아버지께서 깊은 생각에 잠기셔서 내가 한 말을 듣지 못하신 거 같았다.

Ch 2 Answer Key to Comprehension

1	Who is Mr. Bell? Why did he fiddle with Grandad’s bike? He is a bike shop owner. (He is the owner of Mr. Bell’s Cycle Museum) He buys the old bicycles. He repairs and sell them. He fiddled with Grandad’s bike because he was interested in the old bicycle..
2	Why did Mr. Bell said, “Oh, that’s a shame.” Because he found it was not for sale. He could not buy it.
3	What did the boy think about Grandad in secret? Mr. Bell offered a lot of money for the old bike but Grandad turned down the offer.
4	Look at the sign on page 16. What do you think Car Boot Sale is? If you went there, what would you like to buy? List three things you want buy. car book sale이 뭘까요? 거기에 가서 사고 싶은 것 세 가지를 생각해보세요.
