Syd Hoff books made me think of my old days.

When my son started school in the US, his first teacher gave him Syd Hoff books.

He did not know how to read, but he fell in love with the stories.

The simple humorous pictures seemed to fascinate him.

He loved the funny animals in the story and, of course, DINOSAURS!!

My son's ESL teacher was Ms. Meg Moran, Meggy.

She taught him how to read and write English.

He learned English quickly and didn't have to go to the ESL soon.

But I had him meet with Meggy everyday, because I knew

he could have more chances to speak in the ESL class.

All the ESL students wanted to speak to Meggy without fear,

but when they went back to their class, they just sat back and stayed quiet.

Some Korean students had studied English in Korea,

and received good scores at the ESL evaluation test.

Then they usually stayed quiet in the main classrooms,

having no chance to speak, getting no attention from their teachers,

while their mothers were boasting, "My kid doesn't go to ESL."

My son saw Meggy for two years and had great tutoring from her.

She is my son's American mother now.

Oops, I almost forgot. This is what Ms. Meggy said about the worksheets of today.

While you read look at questions in the book. I

n English we change the order of the wordswhen we ask questions.

And some verbsneed the word do (did for past tense)

when we make asentence. For example:

Danny’s friend is a dinosaur. Who is Danny’s friend?

The dinosaur went to the school. Where did the dinosaur go?

Look at how the words change place in thesentence and question.

이 아침 글을 쓰다 보니 길어졌네요.

Syd Hoff 책을 보면서 아이 키울 때 생각이 나서요.

제 아이가 1학년 때 미국 학교를 갔는데 그 때 이 작가의 책을 좋아했습니다.

글을 못 읽어도 그림 만으로 아이의 관심을 붙잡더군요.

메기샘은 제 아이 ESL 선생님이셨습니다.

당시에도 한국서 영어공부를 하고 와서 ESL 안 가도 될 실력인 아이들이 있었어요.

그러나 평가 점수만 그럴 뿐 실제 의사소통이 원활한 건 아니었지요.

ESL에 가지 않고 자기 반에만 있으면 아이들이 말할 기회도 적고,

무엇보다 담임으로부터 별 관심도 못 받는 경우가 많습니다.

그 엄마는 자기 아이가 ESL 안 가는 걸 자랑스럽게 여기지만. ㅋㅋ

제 자신이 ESL 선생이므로 ESL의 혜택을 잘 아는 저는

아이가 곧잘 영어를 했지만 (집에서 책 무지하게 읽고 외우게 시켰음요)

저는 아이가 매일 Meggy샘께 가서 1시간씩 읽고 쓰고 떠들고 놀게 했습니다.

입만 열면 내 자랑.
